Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed Knowledge. Solutions. Mastery. By David James Rockingham III

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 UnleashedMacromedia Dreamweaver is the de facto standard in WYSIWYG web design software. While Dreamweaver can help you design a basic HTML website, the program’s real power is focused on dynamic websites. With Sams Publishing’s 1020 page Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed book, you can move your static HTML website to the next level.

If you’ve ever designed a website, you know the most frustrating thing is having to update old pages with new design elements. Having to work through individual pages, making tweaks, going online to check if everything looks right, going back into Dreamweaver to make more changes and reuploading. Now imagine having to do that with hundreds or even thousands of HTML web pages. Even the mere thought of doing that gives me the jimmies. The good news is that you don’t have to put yourself through all of that pain and misery. The latest version of Macromedia Dreamweaver was created to give web designers the opportunity to build easily manageable and database driven websites. Sounds good, right? Well, let’s take a look at Sams Publishing’s Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed.

Become the Master of your Web Domain
In Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Unleashed, the author starts out assuming that you are new to this program as well and uses part one to point out the interface and the basics of building a basic web page. If you’re not familiar with the product, you’re going to want to pay close attention to this intro chapter because everything you’re going to do in the future is based on this chapter.

Part two continues the basic web design techniques of making static pages. Here you will learn how to implement tables to format your data. You can also use borderless tables to do content and image placement. That’s until you begin learning more about cascading style sheets. You are also given lessons about creating and working within frames and framesets. It’s important to learn frame attributes because you could find your content appearing in the wrong place if you don’t target the content’s appearance properly. Learn how to make HTML forms, use Dreamweaver behaviors and the use of layers towards making table-less designs.

Part three brings more users and shortcuts into the website designing phase. Using Dreamweaver does help cut down on the coding aspect of web design. You can select pre-made objects and HTML elements from the Dreamweaver interface but even that can become tedious as your website grows. To help with this, there are a number of tasks that you can automate to cut down on your workflow time so you can concentrate on the content side of things. You can implement templates and library items to hold information that you want across all of your webpages. When you make a change to one of these, the change will appear globally across your website saving you hours of having to manually edit these pages. You can also use Macromedia’s latest web management tool Contribute. This program will allow users to input their content but you can restrict them from doing any other editing to the pages. This keeps your site consistent but the content flowing continuously..

Part four brings us to the multimedia portion of web design. Here is where you will learn how to incorporate multimedia into your website. This chapter begins with an introduction to DHTML scripting. It then moves onto putting audio and video files on your website. Now creating web friendly images are very important since you would want your website to load quickly and still look appealing to your visitors. This is where you need to learn Macromedia image editing program Fireworks. This program can help you optimize your images for speed and quality but you can also learn how to edit images, create rollover images, creating web photo albums and inserting Fireworks’ HTML code into your website. Moving on to multimedia, this chapter covers the use and integration of Flash and Shockwave into your website. Learn how to insert Flash movies into your Dreamweaver files, work with Flash elements, managing links in Flash movies using Dreamweaver and roundtrip Flash editing.
