Apple Brings Out the Big Guns at NAB New versions of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Shake highlight offerings DVD Studio Pro 2.0
And, finally, DVD Studio Pro 2.0 has also been announced. Aside from an extensive range of enhancements, the software's price has been cut in half to $499. The price drop affects the forthcoming version 2.0 release, as well as the currently shipping 1.5 release. Those who purchase version 1.5 starting today will be able to upgrade to 2.0 when it becomes available for $29.95.

According to Apple, DVD Studio Pro 2.0 will be "a completely new DVD authoring product, rebuilt from the ground up with a breakthrough user interface and packed with innovative features that redefine professional DVD authoring." DVD Studio Pro 2.0 will include fully customizable templates, a new menu editor, timeline-based track editing, new user interface and a new software-based MPEG-2 encoder. Its new user interface is designed to get users of other Apple products, such as iDVD, up and running quickly. It includes a new outline view, enhanced asset information and the timeline-based track editor. The new timeline track-editing functionality is based on the timeline in Final Cut Pro, providing a linear view of clips, audio and other assets, with support for eight camera angles, eight audio tracks and 32 subtitle tracks.

DVD Studio Pro 2's new menu editor allows users to create menus by dragging and dropping content. It includes support for context-sensitive drop palettes for linking to new tracks and allows users to build slideshows and automatically build chapter indexes in one step. "A built-in compositing engine in DVD Studio Pro 2 allows users to edit text directly in the menu editor and make changes to font styles and button graphics without leaving the application," according to Apple.

The software also includes Compressor, a batch transcoding tool that comes bundled with DVD Studio Pro 2 and Final Cut Pro 4, which allows users to batch and export directly to multiple formats, including MPEG-2 for DVD or any supported QuickTime format. Compressor includes watermarking, real-time preview and 30 filters and effects.

DVD Studio Pro 2 is expected to ship in August for $499. Apple has also lowered the price of DVD Studio Pro 1.5 to $499. Those who purchase DVD Studio Pro 1.5 starting today will be eligible for an update to version 2.0 for $29.95. For more information, visit http://www.apple.com/dvdstudiopro.

Ongoing coverage
Obviously, the show is still young, and Apple isn't done yet. The company has also launched a new open XML file format with a FireWire-based I/O framework for Final Cut Pro. According to the company, the format is supported by several initiatives from third-party developers, including Panasonic, AJA, Automatic Duck, Quantel, Pinnacle, Omneon and Curious Graphics.

Quantel? Yes, Quantel. According to that company, the new format will allow users to bring FInal Cut Pro project data directly into an online session using Quantel's hardware finishing systems. Quantel says it's working with Apple and Automatic Duck to make this happen.

And that's not all. We'll continue to cover developments on the Macintosh platform as the show progresses. And we'll bring you all the latest news and interviews from our team of reporters on the show floor beginning Monday, April 7. So be sure to stay tuned!
